Crypto Explainers

2021 - ABC News

The tricky subjects of cryptocurrencies and blockchain were deciphered in two explainer specials for ABC News ‘The Business’. Working with journalist @ChauDave and producer @kaysteadman I created detailed 3D graphics to help tell the story.

The core models I created were a GPU array in detail, a server room, and a blockchain environment. I used Blender 2.90 with it's speedy Evee render engine to create the graphics to a tight deadline.

Incorporated into the 3D environment are 2D motion graphics in the style of markings typically found on computer chips. The 2D graphics were produced in After Effects.

Blending the two mediums assisted with the storytelling, simplifying the visual language for easier comprehension. From a production perspective the 2D/3D mix also made things smoother, speeding up the overall process and making timing motion to voice easier. It also allowed changes to be made with less hassle than if the work was entirely 3D.

Holistically the project received good viewership, with comments on YouTube and social media being much higher than usual. The primary success lies in the visualisation of an abstract topic via compelling graphics that work across ABC News platforms.

Titles and other promotional imagery for the website and app were also developed. They worked well on social media, helping to drive extra viewers to the show and create conversations.
